Connecting the Diaspora Through Knowledge and Action

Blog 6: Family, Finance, and Freedom: What Africa Still Has That the West Took

“You cannot heal in the house where you were broken.”

What the West Broke

Colonization, slavery, and assimilation did more than strip us of land—they fractured the foundations of Black life:

  • Family ties were separated.
  • Wealth-building systems were erased.
  • Spiritual identity was suppressed or repackaged.

In exchange, we were given individualism, materialism, and a disconnection from land and lineage.

What Africa Still Protects

Despite colonization, much of Africa still holds what the diaspora has lost:

  • Land inheritance is still practiced and valued.
  • Extended family networks remain strong.
  • Tradition, ceremony, and cultural rites are still woven into daily life.

Africa didn’t just hold on to soil—it held on to soul.

Why It Matters

The future of Black freedom depends on what we reclaim, not just what we resist.

  • Owning land = economic independence.
  • Rebuilding family = generational wealth.
  • Returning to roots = psychological healing.

Freedom isn’t just political—it’s familial, financial, and spiritual.
